What is periodontitis?
Periodontitis is chronic inflammation of the gums and underlying jawbone. This starts with bacteria found in a layer of plaque. If this layer is not removed properly and therefore keeps accumulating, the gums become irritated. This first stage of this inflammation is called gingivitis and is characterised by red, swollen and bleeding gums.
If gingivitis is not treated promptly, it can progress to periodontitis. The inflammation will then spread to deeper supporting tissue. At this stage, you risk breaking down fibres and bone, which in turn can lead to bare teeth.
Risks
Although proper oral hygiene is essential, there are other factors such as smoking, genetic predisposition, diabetes, hormonal changes (pregnancy), stress, medication use or certain nutritional deficiencies that increase the risk of periodontitis. This is precisely why we always look beyond just your teeth. We also look at your lifestyle, nutritional status and general health.
When should you see a periodontist?
Your dentist or dental hygienist will refer you to a periodontist as soon as you have severe periodontal problems or require implants. This will be, for instance, when you suffer from:
* Approximately half of pregnant women experience pregnancy gingivitis. Women who have good oral hygiene prior to pregnancy are at lower risk. Conversely, pregnant women with periodontitis are up to seven times more likely to have a premature baby or a baby with a low birth weight.
Prevention is better than curing
A healthy mouth starts with the basics: a proper brushing routine, complementary oral care (floss) and regular dental check-ups. Nutrition also plays a direct and indirect role in your oral health.
Costs and reimbursements
The cost of treatments with the periodontist varies depending on your situation. You will always receive clear information about the costs beforehand, so you know what to expect. The table below provides an overview of indicative prices.
