Focus on natural recovery
At Tandartspraktijk Slotervaart, we believe in supporting the body’s natural ability to recover. Inflammation in the mouth is often a signal of imbalance elsewhere in the body. That is why we also look at your lifestyle, diet, medication use and nutrient deficiencies. Together, we will achieve and maintain sustainable oral health.
What does an endodontist do?
An endodontist treats problems located in the pulp (the soft tissue that surrounds the teeth). This pulp consists of blood vessels and nerves and can become inflamed due to tooth decay, a leaking filling or an accident. Without treatment, the inflammation can spread to the jawbone, causing pain and further damage.

When is treatment needed?
The first signs of an inflamed pulp (tooth nerve) can range from tooth sensitivity when consuming hot or cold foods to spontaneous pain that occurs at night. Red and swollen gums, pain when chewing or biting as well as pain that radiates to the jaw, ear or other teeth are common symptoms. However, the inflammation process can be slow and sometimes it is only noticed during a check-up.
Course of treatment
Depending on the situation, root canal treatment usually proceeds as follows:
| Step | Part | Explanation |
| 1 | Diagnosis | First, we will take an X-ray to determine the location of the inflammation. |
| 2 | Anaesthesia | This is followed by a local anaesthetic, meaning you will not feel any pain during the treatment. |
| 3 | Canal cleaning | The affected tooth is opened and the inflamed pulp carefully removed using very fine files. After this, the canal is thoroughly cleaned with a disinfectant liquid. |
| 4 | Filling and sealing | The clean space is then filled with rubber studs (Gutta-percha) and sealed with a filling. In some cases, we recommend a crown for extra strength. |
Repeat treatment
Root canal treatment aims to preserve a tooth that might otherwise have had to be pulled. The success rate of this treatment is high. However, as with all medical treatments, a positive outcome cannot be fully guaranteed.
In special cases, if the inflammation does not heal or if you experience symptoms again, repeat treatment may be necessary. During this treatment, the root canals are cleaned and filled again. During a repeat treatment, the dentist or endodontist uses X-rays to monitor the course of treatment.
Occasionally, surgery (apex resection) may be required. As a last alternative, tooth extraction may be considered, possibly followed by an implant, bridge or dentures.
Alternatives to root canal treatment
Although root canal treatment is often the preferred way to preserve a tooth, there are alternative treatment options:
Each alternative treatment has its own risks and possible complications. Your dentist can give you more information and discuss the most suitable option.
Costs and reimbursement
The costs of root canal treatment vary depending on the number of root canals to be treated and the complexity of the treatment. A front tooth usually has one or two canals, while a molar may have as many as four.
To avoid surprises, we always prepare a clear quote for you in advance. This way, you can check with your health insurer whether (part of) the treatment will be reimbursed. This varies by supplementary insurance. Dental treatments for children up to 18 years old are fully covered by the basic health insurance.

Frequently asked questions
Is the treatment painful?
The treatment is usually painless due to local anaesthesia. However, you may experience some post-operative pain. This is usually quickly solved with a mild painkiller. If the pain persists for more than two weeks, please contact us.
How long does root canal treatment take?
The duration of root canal treatment depends on the number of root canals that need to be filled and the complexity of the situation. On average, treatment takes between 30 minutes and 2 hours. We take the time needed to work carefully and comfortably.
What is the difference between root canal treatment and nerve treatment?
These two treatments mean the same thing and involve the same dental procedure.
