What is a dental implant?

A dental implant is an artificial root made from titanium or zirconium that is placed in the jawbone to replace a tooth. It serves as a solid base for a crown, bridge or click-on dentures. Thanks to its biocompatibility, the implant is almost always accepted by the body.

At Tandartspraktijk Slotervaart, we opt for a holistic approach. Our approach goes beyond just placing an implant. We ensure a healthy oral environment, improve the microbiome and support it with important nutrients such as calcium, vitamin D3, K2 and magnesium. This strengthens the jawbone and gums, promoting recovery after the procedure.

Types of implants: titanium versus zirconium

As an organic dental practice, we look at functionality as well as biocompatibility and aesthetics. That is why we offer zirconium and titanium implants. Zirconium is completely metal-free, less toxic and an attractive alternative for people who are sensitive to metal exposure.

Moreover, zirconium is white which ensures a more natural and attractive aesthetic result, especially when it comes to the front teeth. Unlike titanium, which may look a bit grey at the gum line, zirconium remains invisible, allowing for a more pleasing oral appearance.

When is an implant needed?

  • In case of loss or imminent loss of teeth.
  • Uncomfortable or ill-fitting dentures.
  • In case of difficulty chewing or talking, which may be due to dentures.
  • Tooth loss leading to loss of function or appearance.

1ConsultComprehensive intake during which we will discuss your health and wishes.
2CBCT-scanThree-dimensional scan of the jaw structure and bone quality.
3PlacementThe implant is placed under local anaesthetic, making it virtually painless. If a tooth or molar is still present, it will be extracted during the same appointment. We will also place a temporary solution so you are not left without a tooth during the healing period. This is especially important for the front teeth.
4Healing periodAfter 8 to 12 weeks, the crown, bridge or dentures will be placed.
5AftercareMonitoring and guidance for optimal oral health and longevity.

Aftercare for optimal longevity

Proper aftercare will determine the success and longevity of your implant. Immediately after the treatment, it is important to put as little stress on the treated area as possible. Avoid drinking alcohol for the first two weeks and, if applicable, do not smoke. Swelling is normal and can be reduced by cooling the area regularly with an ice pack.

After about a week, the stitches will be removed and the prosthodontist will assess the healing process. After the procedure, proper oral hygiene remains crucial. Implants in the lower jaw tend to last longer than those in the upper jaw, but with regular maintenance and checkups (with both the dentist and dental hygienist), implants can last more than 25 years.

Costs of an implant

The costs of an implant depends on your situation. Which situation applies to you is always discussed with the prosthodontist first. We will always inform you about the costs in advance, and you will receive a personal treatment plan with a corresponding quote after a consultation. We are often asked whether these treatments are covered by the insurance. In some cases, basic or supplementary insurance will cover the costs. However, you will need a special application for this. It is best to check with your health insurer about what exactly you need to do.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best way to cool a swollen cheek?

After placement of the implant, you may experience some swelling in the cheek. For the first few hours, cool the cheek with some ice in a cloth or an ice pack: cool for 15 minutes, take a break for 15 minutes. Swelling is usually at its worst after two days and will then gradually get less.

What do we recommend in case of (persistent) post-operative pain?

Any post-operative pain is usually short-lived and easily manageable with painkillers. If you still experience throbbing pain, swelling or other symptoms after 4-5 days, please contact our practice.

Are there alternatives to an implant?

Absolutely. Insufficient jawbone may require bone remodelling or grafting, either with the use of the body’s own bone or artificial bone. In some cases, a bridge is a suitable alternative, especially when the surrounding teeth are still strong and healthy.

Frame dentures or full dentures can also provide relief, especially in case of multiple tooth loss. Are you in doubt about an implant or dreading the procedure? We will happily discuss your options and find a solution that suits your needs, health and lifestyle.

What does bone grafting involve?

A bone graft can restore the part of the jaw where there used to be a tooth or where there is bone loss. The bone may be taken from elsewhere in your mouth or body, or it may be artificial. After placement, the graft will grow into your jaw, after which the implant can be placed.
